(6 Aug 1925, Thursday, Texola Tribune, Texola, Beckham Co, OK): Word has been received here of the accidental death of Mrs. R. T. Hill. The information on how the accident occurred is meager and we cannot give any of the details of the accident. She was with her husband and other members of the family had left here a few days ago for a visit with relatives and the accident occurred while en route to the home of their relatives. (13 Aug 1925, Thursday, Texola Tribune, Texola, Beckham Co, OK): (Accident Causing Death of Mrs. Hill) The accident occurred on the road two miles south of Eastland, Texas, was unavoidable on the part of the driver of the car in which Mrs. Hill was riding. It happened at 2:30 in the afternoon when they met two young men presumed to be making their escape from officers who were wanting them on a charge of having robbed a store. According to Mr. Hill, husband of the dead woman, the driver of the car was over on his side of the road and the parties that ran into him apparently they just turned their car into the Hill car. It looked at first like they were going to be missed but such was not the case. Occupants of the car in which the deceased met death were Clayton Barton, son-in-law, and to whose home in Hamilton they were going, Mrs. Ruth Hodges and Miss Ellen Hill. None of the other occupants of the car were seriously hurt. Mrs. Hill never regained consciousness after being hurt. Her skull was fractured by a heavy blow apparently from the windshield or front bow of the top of the car. She lived from 2:30 in the afternoon to 7:00 o'clock Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on July 27th, after the Hills left here on Saturday before for an extended visit with relatives in that section of Texas. When the death dealing car hit the Hill car the occupants never offered to stop and offer assistance in any way nor to find out if any one was seriously hurt. Officers, however, captured them late in the afternoon and they have been indicated (sic) for murder by a Texas grand jury. Mr. Hill in telling us the details of the accident had strong words of praise for the people of Eastland, Texas, as he said they were given every assistance possible for strangers to receive. The body of Mrs. Hill was shipped to Girade (sic), Texas, and interment made there. All the children were present at the funeral. At the time of her death deceased was 62 years old. She had lived a consecrated Christian life and was a member of the Bethel Baptist church. She was known by her neighbors as a kindly person and a devoted mother and wife. She leaves to mourn her death her husband and nine children, six of whom are by the present union and three by former marriage. They are Mrs. Ruth Hodges, Sweetwater, Oklahoma, Mrs. Lucile Reaves, of the River View community, Elmer Hill, Sweetwater, Kull and Ellen Hill at home. Mrs. Fred McGaha, Girard, Texas. Mrs. May Smith residing in New Mexico and Mrs. Minnie Lou Drake residing in the Bethel community. The Tribune joins with the host of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved husband and children. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
