Train Hits School Truck; Boys Were Going After Stalled Auto. One Canute highschool boy was killed and another was seriously injured when the Rock Island local train struck a school truck near Canute this morning. Lockwood Hinkle, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Hinkle, who live south of Canute, died almost instantly when the crash occurred, and Fay Northrip, 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Northrip of Clinton, is in a local hospital suffering with a broken back. The accident occurred about 8:30 this morning while the boys were bringing a chain to drag a truck out of a snow drift. The Hinkle boy was the regular school truck driver and Northrip went with him to get the chain. They had gone to a nearby farmhouse, had gotten the chain and were crossing the railroad tracks to return to the stalled car when the train struck them. The school truck was completely demolished, according to reports from Canute. Students in School. Lockwood Hinkle was a freshman in the Canute highschool and the Northrip boy is a senior in the school. Both of the boys were well known in the community. Cause for the accident cannot be explained. It is believed that the noise of the truck banging over the frozen ruts kept the boys from hearing the warning signals of the train. The truck was on the track before either of the boys knew that a train was near, a friend of Northrip said. There was no time to make a jump for safety or any move for the boys to free themselves, people here from Canute said. Physicians attending the Northrip youth say that he will probably recover. One vertebrae is crushed and another cracked but no pressure from the bones is on the spinal cord, doctors said. No internal injuries were discovered by the physicians. Funeral services will probably be held tomorrow for the Hinkle boy. It was announced Grubitz and Son, funeral directors, are in charge of arrangements. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
