A. Hise, 223 North Randall street, who drowned last evening in the pond on the old Amos Williams farm three miles southeast of the city while visiting his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Daily. Rev. J. A. Land officiated at the ceremonies. The youth and his parents went to the farm late yesterday. Jack Vestal went to the barn with his cousin, Walter Dale, to watch him milk the cows. When Mr. Hise last noticed his son he was sitting on a fence near the barn. A few minutes later Walter Dale came running to the house calling for his uncle and told him that Jack Vestal had gone in the pool and had failed to come up after going under the water. Father Finds Body. Mr. Hise rushed to the water and after three dives located the body of his son in about five and a half feet of water. A physician arrived about five minutes after the body was taken from the water but hope for resuscitation was soon abandoned. The body had been under water about 10 minutes when Mr. Hise found it, the father estimated. This time and the few minutes the doctor took in driving from the city were sufficient for all hope of reviving the youth to pass, it was stated. Jack Vestal had been eager to learn to swim, his parents said. He could take a few strokes but could not go any appreciable distance through the water. It is believed that he waded out as far as possible and then started to swim. When he got tired and tried to let down and stand on the bottom he found he was too far out and became frightened, it is surmised. His fright is credited with overcoming him and causing him to drown. Was Swimming Pool. The pond was once a popular swimming pool for people in Elk City and the surrounding communities. It was closed as a public place about three years ago. Two seasons back it was leased by some men who formed a club and had a private recreation resort. Jack Vestal was born in Elk City on Dec. 15, 1920 and lived here all of his life. He was an only son. Other than his parents, relatives surviving the youth living here are Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bass and Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hise, grandparents; Mrs. J. C. Daily, Mrs. W. C. Burl, Mrs. R. D. Dugan and Mrs. Jess Reeves, aunts; and George Hise, Millard Bass, Andy Bass, Noah Bass, Everett Bass, C. C. Bass and E. H. Bass, uncles. Interment was made in the Fairlawn Cemetery, with Killough-Hullum, funeral directors, in charge. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
