Nelms J. Holmberg, 53 years old, of 1628 West Twentieth street was in critical condition in Tonkawa hospital Thursday following an auto accident 20 miles south of Blackwell early in the day, according to word received here. Although physicians were unable to determine the extent of Holmberg's injuries they reported that he seemed to be paralyzed from the hips down. Holmberg's daughter Evelyn, who was driving, received slight bruises and a son, Sam, was uninjured when the large sedan swerved and turned over. (31 Jul 1930, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): Funeral rites for Nels John Holmberg, former citizen and farmer of this community, who died in an Oklahoma hospital last Thursday following injuries received two weeks ago in an automobile wreck near Tonkawa, were held in the Methodist church here Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock, in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives. Services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Morris. Burial was in Erick cemetery under the direction of D. G. Fatheree, Funeral Director. (21 Aug 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): OBITUARY John Nels Holmberg passed away at his home, 1628 West 20 street, Oklahoma City, July 25th, 1930. He was born in Sweden, March 1, 1876, coming to America in 1888. He spent his early life near Oakland, Nebraska, going later to Evanston, Ill., where he attended a seminary for 18 months. In 1904 he was married to Miss Alvina Olson, and to this union were born four children: Emanuel, Evelyn, Clarence and Samuel, all being at his bedside during his last few days of illness. In 1908 Mr. Holmberg left Illinois and came to a farm near Erick, Oklahoma. He lived near Erick for twenty-two years, where he was known and loved by everyone. He was prominent in the business and religious circles of the community and considered one of the most successful farmers in the community. He was active in the Methodist church, attending first prayer service in the church and constant in attendance from that time on. For over eight years he was the superintendent of the Methodist Sunday school, and a member of the board of stewards. His death was caused by an automobile accident in which he was fatally injured. He with Evelyn and Samuel had started to Rochester, Minn., to visit Mrs. Holmberg who was in a hospital there. He was conscious to the last and spoke often of his friends in Erick and called many of them by name. The services were held in Oklahoma City and the body was taken to Erick where services were held in the M. E. Church before a house filled with friends and relatives. He is survived, beside the immediate family, by his mother and two brothers and two sisters in Sweden and John Holmberg of Los Angeles, California, Emil Holmberg, Gross Holmberg, one sister, Mrs. Chas.
