Monday evening, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hubbard, living nine miles northeast of Elk City, left their little six weeks old baby asleep on the bed, she to go to a neighbors to return some tools borrowed, he to the field about a quarter of a mile away to get a little feed. Two little boys, five and three years of age, followed the father. Soon after he had gotten to the field, he glanced toward the house and saw it was in flames. He drove back immediately but the fire had made such headway it was impossible to get the baby. It was a dug-out and when the roof fell in the neighbors threw water in the corner where the bed was situated, and in this manner was able to get the body of the baby before it was entirely consumed. They lost all their household goods, clothes, etc. They do not know how the fire started. Funeral services for the baby were held on Tuesday morning in charge of Rev. Martin, and interment was made in the Thompson cemetery (Custer County). The people and neighbors did all they could for the distressed parents. Mrs. Hubbard is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Purkey, and is now prostrated at their home southwest of Elk City. The grief stricken parents have the sympathy of all in this sad hour. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
