(3 Apr 1924, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): J. C. Hussey Mistakes Poison for Salts, With Fatal Result. J. C. Hussey, a pioneer resident and highly respected farmer of the Hext section, accidentally poisoned himself Thursday last, death following a few hours later. About 11 o'clock that forenoon Mr. Hussey remarked that he was not feeling well, and believed that he would go into the house and take a dose of salts. An hour later he became very ill, and physicians were summoned, but he passed away about the middle of the afternoon. Investigation revealed the fact that standing near the box containing salts was a disinfectant, in a package very similar in appearance. Comparison showed this box nearly empty, while the salts had crusted over, showing that none had recently been used, leaving a very logical conclusion that Mr. Hussey had mistaken the packages, and accidentally poisoned himself. Interment was in the Pioneer cemetery. Mr. Hussey was a pioneer resident of this section, having settled there in December 1900. He was a native of Indiana, and 76 years of age. During his residence in this section he had gained the friendship and esteem of a large circle of friends, all of whom extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. (3 Apr 1924, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): J. C. Hussy (sic) Dies Suddenly Mr. J. C. Hussy, one of the best known citizens of the Hext Switch community, died very suddenly last Friday evening. Mr. Hussy, was apparently in good health and had just returned from the mail box to the house and remarked to his wife, that he believed he would take a dose of salts as his head was paining him. Mrs. Hussy informed that the salts was in the safe. He got what he supposed was the medicine, and took a large dose. In a very few minutes he was complaining of severe pains in his stomach. A doctor was summoned and it was discovered that Mr. Hussey had taken a poison that they were using for the extermination of chicken lice and nits. All that loving hands could do to save him was of no avail and just before the end came he called his good wife to his bedside and said: "Goodbye wife, death has overtaken me!" The bereaved family have our sympathy in this sad hour. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
