(13 Apr 1923, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): HENRY JONES DIES OF BURNS Henry Jones, our fellow citizen, died a horrible death last Thursday night, April 5, from burns he received at the Black Hotel that morning about four o'clock. Mr. Jones had been out of town and stopped at the hotel rather than disturb his family at the late hour he retired. A cigarette Mr. Jones had been smoking set fire to the bed clothes and he awoke with his shirt aflame. His distressing calls brought the hotel proprietor to his room, who dashed a pitcher of water on his burning clothes. The flames had nearly burned the shirt from him, but he never lost his nerve, and donned his coat, hat and shoes and walked to his home before he realized the seriousness of his burns. A physician was called, and he was hurried to the Elk City Hospital. Early in the day the doctors told there was not a chance for his life, while every effort was made in his behalf. Up to the last hour, Mr. Jones never lost consciousness and he knew his friends, whom he spoke to and told he was all right and would get well. The end came Thursday night at 10:30. The body was taken in charge by Grubitz and Son, undertakers, and funeral services were held by Rev. Sebe Thomas at the Baptist church Friday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. A large crowd witnessed the ceremony and burial at Fairlawn cemetery. Henry Jones was born near Gainesville, Texas, in 1876. He leaves a loving wife and five children, two sons and three daughters, and a number of near relatives and friends to mourn his death. He had lived in Elk City for a number of years, being in the cattle business most of the time. Mr. Jones was a good father to his excellent family, all of whom loved him greatly. He was loved by all his friends. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
