The boy had left the Kennemer home early Sunday morning as was his custom to bring the cows from the pasture for milking. When he did not return after a certain length of time his father became alarmed. After a search over the farm in which he failed to discover any trace of the boy or his horse, he sent an alarm throughout the neighborhood. About thirty friends and neighbors of Mr. Kennemer joined in a search for the missing boy which resulted in his discovery in a narrow deep ravine near the road. Weeds had grown at the sides of the ravine and had probably prevented the boy from seeing it until the horse had stumbled into it. On account of the narrowness of the depression the horse had been unable to arise from the position where it had fallen and in making the attempt had crushed the boy underneath. The boy's neck was broken. Funeral services were held at Retrop cemetery, Monday, June 25. Grubitz and Son, funeral directors, had charge of the arrangements. The Kennemers are farmers who have lived for a number of years in this community. They live about eighteen miles from Elk City. (27 Jun 1929, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The small son of T. Z. Kennemer, living southeast of Carter, was found dead in a ditch with his horse on top of him, Sunday about noon. The boy had gone out after the cows and when he failed to return a search was made for him. Not until after several hours was the tragedy discovered. Footprints of the horse indicating that it had stumbled were found along the edge of the narrow ditch which was overgrown with grass. There the horse was found, lying on its back with the boy pinned under him. The lads neck was broken and death was probably instant. The horse was almost dying when found. This was the parent's only son and the tragedy comes as a great shock to the family and friends. (28 Jun 1929, Friday, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Vernon Kennemer, about thirteen years old, who lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zack Kennemer, in the Retrop community, about ten miles east of Carter, was probably instantly killed Sunday morning when his horse fell on him as he was looking for the cows near his home. He had mounted a family horse about sunup and was riding bareback. When he failed to return neighbors instituted a search for him, and he was not found till about one o'clock Sunday afternoon, and then he was in a ditch about three feet deep and the horse on its back on top of him. The cows were seen some distance away, and it is supposed he saw them and turned to cross a narrow ditch when the horse fell. The boy's neck was broken. Funeral services were held at Retrop Monday afternoon. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
