Tuesday evening while grinding feed and using a gasoline engine something went wrong and in trying to step over the drive belt he stepped on it and was thrown in the machine. Before he could be rescued his body was beaten in such a manner that from the start his life was despaired of, though everything possible was done to help him. An operation was performed for intestinal hemorrhage but of no avail. He lingered until this morning when he passed away. He was well known as one of Canute's best citizens, and people there as well as his many friends here are deeply shocked and grieved at his most deplorable death. At the time of going to press we have not heard what funeral arrangements are being made, but no doubt his body will be interred in Missouri by the side of his mother, who died a few months ago. (6 Jun 1918, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MIKE KILMARTIN Mike Kilmartin was born in Lebanon, Mo., forty-three years ago and died at Canute, Okla., May 30th, 1918. Funeral services were held at Lebanon, Mo., Monday, June 3rd. He had two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Schull and Mrs. P. J. Joyce, both of Canute, who accompanied his remains to their last resting place. Mike Kilmartin was a just and upright man and lived square before God and man and he was known as a good man from the Kansas line to the Rio Grande. Canute has suffered a very heavy loss as Mike Kilmartin was one of their most substantial citizens. He had been one of our foremost citizens - devoting time and ability to the upbuilding of this western country. The sorrow expressed by neighbors and friends was a tribute to the memory of our friend. The deepest sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
