(11 Oct 1917, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): The citizens were horrified yesterday evening when it became known that Miss Lola Lacy was killed in an accident when a through freight train struck a car in which she and Miss Willie Jones were riding. Miss Lacy was a nurse in the Emergency Hospital and Miss Jones is in charge of the office. They had been out riding in Dr. Palmer's auto and were returning to town conversing in a happy manner and did not notice the train until too late, although the engineer gave a warning whistle. When the engine struck the auto Miss Lacy was thrown under the train, killing her instantly. Miss Jones was also thrown to the pavement and received some bruises but none serious. The shock in seeing her friend killed caused her to collapse. Immediately after the accident Grubitz & Son were notified and the body was taken to the undertaking parlors, after the Coroner, R. W. Jones investigated, and gave orders for removal. The manner in which Grubitz and Son transformed the mangled body to one as natural as life is almost unbelieviable (sic) and was a great satisfaction to the relatives and friends. Miss Lacy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lacy, was eighteen years old last June. She was one of Elk City's most respected young ladies and was known to nearly all our people. A fitting obituary will be printed next week. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church Friday at three o'clock P.M., conducted by Rev. Houck. A brother, Seth Lacy, who has been attending a business college in Chilicothe, Mo., will arrive tonight. A sister, Mrs. V. P. Patterson, of near Canute, arrived last night. Two sisters, Carrie and Ruth and a brother, Dennis, are also at the home with the parents heart-broken over the terrible tragedy. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
