The two men had been picking cotton for Floyd Wetherman, on the McKinney farm located 5 miles Southwest of Erick. Both men are strangers here and very little is known about them. From the best information obtainable, the men had been drinking whiskey and as a general rule a man poluted (sic) with fire water is very apt to get into serious trouble. Brownson insisted on Boitel taking a drink, which he refused to do this precipitated the trouble. An old stove leg was laying on top of the stove in the room where the two men were staying and when trouble started Boitel secured the leg, dealing Brownson a couple of blows over the head crushing his skull. After the fight he brought the man to town for medical treatment, and he passed away at the King Hotel. The body of the dead man was taken to the Fatheree Funeral Home, where it is being held until relatives can be located. Willie Boitel was turned over to the sheriff and is now in the county jail charged with the killing. A telegram was received this week from a Mr. Wyatt, stating that the dead man's real name was Henry Brown, of Lovington, New Mexico. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
