Sevier. The Seviers lived in the south Spring Creek community and were renters on the farm of Tom DeArmond. The place is on the main road from Delhi to Mangum. Sevier shot his brother twice with a shot gun, both loads of shot hitting above the waist, one covering the heart and the other lower. The skin of the dead man when examined by Dr. Windle of this city, showed more than 160 punctures. The two brothers lived near each other on the same farm and had partnership sheds, etc., and a dispute arose on Tuesday night over their chickens and eggs. A quarrel ensued but no violence resulted at that time. On yesterday morning the men met and quarreled again at which time various threats were made by both after which they each went into their respective houses for their guns. When George came out and started for the lots to get his team for the day's work the men again faced each other at a distance of not more that 30 or 40 feet and John, the younger one, fired the fatal shot at his brother. The wives of the men together with their children remained together throughout the day and seemed perfectly reconciled in the face of their trouble. The body of the dead man was buried in the cemetery at Spring Creek during the afternoon. (22 Jul 1920, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): On Wednesday of last week two brothers named Sevair (sic), near Sayre, had some trouble which resulted in the younger man being killed, though he, too, shot twice at his brother. Both used shot guns. It is believed by many that the very hot weather coupled with the hard work he had been doing, caused the younger man to temporarily lose his mind, for he started the trouble and the other shot in self defense. They came from a well known family of Kentucky, an ancestor being the first governor of that state. The two brothers and families had always lived together and there had never before been any trouble among them. The elder brother has given bail. (29 Jul 1920, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): John Sevier, who shot and killed his brother, George Sevier, at their home south of this city last week is now in the hands of the law and under a $10,000 bond. Friends of the family who knew them in Tennessee say that the older brother had killed one man in his native state and that he has been known to have had several bad affairs in Oklahoma. They have reported also that the younger Sevier was not the same sort of man but one who had always been law abiding. His friends from near Granite went on his bond and he now free to await the next term of court here. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
