Cordell, Okla., Dec 1. - Lee Southworth was shot and killed, City Marshall Ed Cartwright badly cut and left in a critical condition, and Tom Brown a deputy sheriff, seriously cut and battered in a street battle that occured at 8:30 o'clock tonight in front of the City National Bank. The city marshall undertook to arrest Southworth and Otto and Carl Bowers, three farmers, who are alleged to have been intoxicated and creating a disturbance. The men resisted and a conflict participated, in which Marshall Cartwright shot and killed Southworth. Deputy Brown came to the assistance of Cartwright, who was being assaulted by the other two men. Both the officers were badly cut by knives in the hands of their assailants before citizens could come to their relief. Otto Bowers was finally overcome, seeing which his brother turned and fled. Otto Bowers was placed in jail and officers started in pursuit of Carl. Marshal Cartwright was cut four times by his assailants, one gash on his face extending from ear to chin, and his condition is critical. Deputy Brown was badly battered and sustained a three-inch knife in his wrist. It is alleged that Southworth and the two Bowers men cherished an old grudge against Marshal Cartwright.
