(3 Nov 1910, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): GEO. W. TEEL SHOT TO DEATH A great many people here will remember a character who formerly lived in Elk City named Geo. W. Teel. He was familiarly known as "Mex." His principal avocation while in this city was gambling and bootlegging. On Friday last Teel was shot to death by the Marshal of Cordell. As near as the Democrat can get at the facts, the marshal attempted to search "Mex" for a bottle of whisky. Teel went for his gun, but the marshal was the quickest and reached his gun first and killed Teel. It is reported to the Democrat that the killing has created some excitement at Cordell, and that the marshal is in jail. Teel is supposed to be a Mexican and passed as such while here but those who profess to know say that he was a mixture of Negro, Indian and Mexican. (Nov 1910, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): G. W. "MACK" TEAL KILLED. Conflicting Reports Regarding the Details of the Affair. Last Saturday G. W. Teal was shot and instantly killed by Page Nelson, city marshall at Cordell. There are many conflicting reports regarding the killing but the most reliable of these is to the effect that while returning with a bunch of horses from a convict camp near Cordell where Teal had been acting as overseer (himself a convict) was requested by Nelson to undergo a search. Mack at once pulled back his coat to show that he had "nothing on him," and Nelson shot him through. Nelson was immediately arrested by the sheriff of Washita county, who was a witness. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
