The four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Massey was burned to death at their residence near the depot Saturday night. Mr. Massey, who is employed at the round house was at work and the mother was in the yard and had left the child by a hot stove when in some manner its clothing caught fire and it came running to its mother who after considerable delay extinguished the flames by using a wet blanket. The child was so badly burned that it died Sunday morning. The unfortunate parents have the sympathy of the entire community. (12 Dec 1902, The Sayre Enterprise, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Last Sunday evening a little 4-year old girl, of Mr. and Mrs. John Massey, residing southwest of the depot, accidentally set fire to its clothing and was fatally burned. When the child discovered that its clothes were on fire it ran to its mother, who was .... (word missing) a cow, but as it reached her side its clothes were in a mass of flames. This little one lingered until near 3 o'clock Monday morning when death relieved its suffering. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near Doxey Tuesday. Mr. Massey is an employee of the Choctaw railroad and was at work in the round house when the terrible accident occurred. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
