(1 Jul 1915, Thursday, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): E. L. McCraw, a well-known farmer, living two and one-half miles southeast of Berlin, committed suicide last Friday night by hanging himself to a rafter in his barn. Mr. McCraw had been in poor health for several months during which time he had suffered great bodily pain, and it is believed that his physical condition caused him to end his life. The deceased was 56 years of age. He leaves a wife and six children, two of whom are married. Mr. McCraw visited at the home of a neighbor Friday night until about 11:00 o'clock when he returned home, apparently in good spirits. Some time during the night he arose from his bed and went to the barn where he made preparations for his own destruction. At the north end of the barn was a number of bales of hay upon which he stood while he fastened the end of the rope to a rafter. Then adjusting the rope around his neck and with his hands securely tied in front of him, he fell from the hay. During the early hours of the morning his wife and family begun a search and finally discovered him cold in death. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon and the remains were laid at rest in the Berlin cemetery. The deceased was a brother to Mrs. J. A. Norman of this city. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
