J. Elliott and wife, five miles north of town, and grandson of J. S. Smallwood of this city, died Sunday afternoon about four o'clock from the effect of a blow in the temple with a baseball. The injury was received while Mr. Miller was playing ball at the park in this city Saturday afternoon. During the game he was hit in the head with the ball, but the blow did not knock him down, and at the time he did not think he was seriously injured. He went to the home of his grandfather in this city and ate his supper. About nine o'clock that night his head began hurting and a physician was sent for. About nine o'clock Sunday morning he became unconscious, and after a consultation between physicians it was decided that an operation was necessary. A piece of the skull was removed and it was found that his brain had been jarred loose from the skull. He never rallied from the operation and died about four o'clock. He was married and 31 years of age. He made his home with his mother and step-father, T. J. Elliott and wife, five miles north of this city. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, with interrment (sic) at GrandView cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones. - Beckham County News. (27 Sep 1911, Wednesday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Robert C. Miller, a noble young man who was born Aug. 19, 1880, in Clinton county, Mo., died at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. J. S. Smallwood, of this city, August 27, 1911, age 31 years and 8 days. Some years ago Robert went to California to live, last winter he was taken sick with fever, his good mother sent for him and he came home Feb. 3, 1911, and since made his home with his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Elliott, who live 5 miles north of Elk City, Grandview neighborhood. Robert was one of our noble young men, kind and affectionate. Since coming home he had lived a Christian life, weilding a good influence over his loved ones and friends. He had many friends who loved him, for to know him was to love him. Robert was faithful to his friends and to any trust commited to him. Saturday evening before his death he was playing base ball and during the game was struck by a ball, while suffering he continued playing until the game was out. After the game was over he went to his grandmother's, the suffering became worse and he was soon unconscious, a physician was called and everything possible was done to save his life but all in vain, and Sunday evening he died surrounded by loved ones and friends. Why this good young man with bright prospects before him should be called away so suddenly is more than we can understand. But this we know, that our Heavenly Father knows best and into His hands we must commit ourselves. The writer conducted the funeral service Monday evening at Grandview school house. A very large number of loved ones and friends were present and followed the body to the cemetery where they deposited the remains of Robert, whom they loved so tenderly, to rest and await the Resurrection morning. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
