The little fellow's mother had left him in the house while she was absent for a few minutes, and when she returned he was lying on the floor with his clothing burned almost entirely off and his body severely burned. He lived several hours, but was so severely burned that nothing could be done to save him. The parents are well known residents of the Carter community. Mrs. Morrow is a daughter of J. S. Siddall. (4 Mar 1909, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The little 2 year old child of Chas. Merrow (sic) who lives ten miles southeast of Sayre, burned to death last Friday. The child was given a paper cigarette by a small brother and inhaling the smoke, was overcome and dropped the blazing paper in his lap. Its clothes became instantly ignited and the child was burned terribly, only living two hours after the accident. The parents were working in the field some distance from the house and seeing the blaze ran to the house, but unfortunately, arrived too late to save the little one. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
