A very sad accident occurred yesterday afternoon in the lake south of town which caused the death of Mrs. Callie Nivison. There were several ladies in the party and they were going in bathing. Mrs. Nivison waded out until the water was about waist deep, and on taking another step she stepped off into water which was over her head. The other ladies being unable to swim could render no assistance, however, they did all they could. Mrs. Nivison is a widow and the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Rolph, who lives about 15 miles northwest of Sayre. She leaves 2 small children, a boy and a girl, age 5 and 3 years. (4 Sep 1903, Friday, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Callie Nivison, a widowed daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rolph who lived on their claim on Starvation Creek, left home a few days ago to obtain employment, to aid in supporting her two small children and was taken back home yesterday a corpse, to her grief stricken parents and orphan children. On Wednesday, accompanied by other ladies, she went to one of the lakes to go bathing and was wading near the shore in water about waist deep to herself when she stepped of (sic) a bank into very deep water. All the assistance the other ladies could give to her, was of no avail, she sank to the bottom of the lake and to her death. Her body was recovered in a short time, and taken to the home of her parents from where the funeral will be held today. Much sympathy was shown by the people of Sayre for the grieved parents and the orphan children. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
