Miss Noel, aunt of Mrs. W. C. Jones, started to get up out of a chair Tuesday when one of her limbs was asleep and in trying to straighten it out she fell which resulted in a very bad broken hip. She was taken to the Elk City Hospital, and is getting along as nicely as can be expected. (20 Jan 1925, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Miss Laura Noel died Friday night, January 16th, from the effects of a fall she received a couple of weeks ago. She came here September 11, 1924, from Tennessee, to visit her brother, J. A. Noel, who planned to keep her here, and she being so well satisfied was perfectly contented in Elk City, where she had made many friends. It was with deep sorrow our people learned of her death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mitchell. A very large crowd was in attendance and many beautiful floral offerings were banked around the casket. He read a telegram from the Baptist Auxiliary of her old Tennessee home who offered deepest sympathy and praised her for her work. At the close of the funeral service the body was taken to Fairlawn Cemetery, in charge of Grubitz & son, and laid tenderly to rest in the Noel lot. Laura Noel was born in West Tennessee, near Jackson, in May, 1844, and died in Elk City, Oklahoma, January 16th, and was near her 80th year. She joined the Baptist church at the age of fourteen years, and was a member sixty-seven years and never grew tired in her work for the Master, and her life was one of usefulness and devotion in the cause of Christ and in helping others. At the death of her youngest married sister, she assumed charge of the three young children, who were left, and reared and educated them. Rev. Mitchell said he was reminded of the motto, "Duty done means victory won," and such was the case with this noble woman who had won her crown of life in her heavenly home. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
