D. NORTON IS KILLED WHEN EL RENO HOTEL AWNING FALLS John D. Norton was suddenly killed in El Reno this morning when the snow-laden awning at the Campbell hotel where he was staying collapsed and fell on him, crushing his life out almost instantly. The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. T. A. Witten and Tom Sappington, who were with Mr. Norton, escaped with bruises. The three men were attending the Farmer-Labor-League convention at El Reno, and were stopping at the Campbell hotel. They were just leaving the hotel to return home when the awning gave way under its weight of snow. Mr. Norton was injured internally according to a long distance telephone report from the office of the El Reno American, who furnished the Herald details of the tragedy. John Norton was one of the first settlers in the old Cheyenne country near Cowden. He had made his home there for some thirty years, and was a well-to-do farmer. He has maintained a home in Weatherford for the past several years, where the children have attended to school. Mr. Witten and Mr. Sappington are also old timers in the community. Mr. Sappington is present county commissioner of Washita county. Mr. Norton is survived by his wife and four children. - Carnegie Herald, March 19. Mr. Norton was an uncle of Mrs. A. G. Steele of this place, and the week before was in Elk City to attend the funeral of little Glenna May Steele. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
