(9 Jun 1927, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The following taken from a Las Animas, Colorado, newspaper, brings the news of the death of L. C. Oxford, a former pioneer resident of the section southwest of this city: L. C. Oxford, 64 years of age, died at the Las Animas hospital at 9:30 last night from injuries received when he was hit by a Santa Fe special train about 5:45 that evening. Mr. Oxford was badly crushed, several ribs and one arm being broken, also he sustained terrible cuts about the head and face, a fracture of the skull, and internal injuries. The accident happened at the crossing near the B. S. Knapp place just west of town. Mr. Oxford had been in the city and was on his way home, driving a Ford truck. He had turned off the Main road north when the tragedy occurred. There were no witnesses to the accident, but from the looks of the truck it was evident that Mr. Oxford had almost beat the train across the track. The engine evidently hit the right hind wheel and threw the truck back into the fast moving train. This wheel was demolished, indicating that it had been hit. Mr. Oxford was carried along the tracks for about 50 feet sustaining injuries as noted above. His son, Austin Oxford, who lives a short distance north of the tracks, heard the engine whistling and saw the train come to a stop, and realizing that an accident had happened, drove with Mrs. Oxford to the scene. Arriving there they found it was their own father. He was placed in the auto and rushed to the Las Animas Hospital, but it was evident that chances were very much against his recovery. He was conscious at times, but could give no account of the accident. At 9:30 he passed peacefully away. L. C. Oxford has been a resident of Bent county for the past 11 years, coming here from Oklahoma in June 1916. He lived on the south side for a number of years, but last March moved to a small tract of land which he purchased just west of Las Animas. He is survived by his wife, four sons and five daughters. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
