(8 Mar 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MAN KILLED IN GRANITE OIL FIELD Granite Enterprise: (Greer County, Oklahoma) Frank B. Paddock, well known oil man, was fatally injured about 11 o'clock, Friday night at the R. C. Knight Rig, on the Robert Williams farm north of town. Mr. Paddock was watching the operations of the rig, which had spudded in that day on the first of two wells for which Mr. Knight had contracted to drill. He picked up the end of a rope that was hanging down from above, and telling Mr. Knight to hold it, he started to tie the rope back out of the way. While doing this the casing block, a heavy iron pulley, weighing about 350 (pounds) fell. The iron pulley crashed through the roof of the shed over the rig, striking a 2x12 stringer which fell on Mr. Paddock, inflicting the injuries from which he died four hours later without regaining consciousness. Friday was certainly an unlucky day at the rig, as only about three hours before Mr. Paddock was injured, Chester Knight, one of the workers, lost a finger. He had dropped his work glove, and started to pick it up when the baler came down on his hand and amputating the index finger of the left hand at the first joint.
