W. Penry received word last week of the death of her son, Harold Peavler, which occurred November 26, in San Antonio, Texas, where he made his home with his parents. On account of Mrs. Penry being in poor health and the shock being so great she was unable to go to San Antonio for the funeral. Harold was twenty years of age and had intended coming here in a short time. (11 Dec 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Last week we told of the death of Harold Peavler, son of Mrs. O. W. Penry. A copy of San Antonio Evening News was received by her last week giving the details of the accident where he received the injuries that caused his death on the 26th of November. Harold was twenty years old the 28th of last September. The article which had a large picture of wreck was as follows: This automobile lost in the race with a Katy freight train for right-of-way over the South Flores Street crossing Wednesday morning. A box car was on the crossing when the automobile arrived. As a result of the accident, Harold Peavler, driver of the automobile, is probably fatally injured, and his two companions in the car are in Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital suffering from lesser injuries. Three young men were seriously injured, one perhaps fatally, early Wednesday, when the automobile in which they were riding in South Flores street smashed into a string of freight cars on the M.K. & T. railroad. Those hurt and their injuries are: Harold Peavler, 108 Stace Street; both legs and left arm broken, body bruises and internal injuries, expected to die. Fred Garrish, 113 Bradley Street, Harlandale, right leg broken, right shoulder cut, scalp gashed. Sid Neal, 108 Stace Street, left leg shattered, bruised about body. Four railroad men sitting on the top of the box car struck by the automobile escaped injury, although the box car and machine were tangled in a mass of wreckage by the impact. The members of the train crew who experienced this narrow escape and who later helped in extricating the injured are Fred Haggerson, foreman, and W. G. Parks, M. N. Wolfson and L. E. Spence, switchmen. The automobile was going south at a rate of 50 miles an hour, the railroad men charged. A string of freight cars was being pushed by a switch engine, and several of the cars had passed the crossing when the automobile smashed into it. Peavler was driving the machine. His body was hanging over the side of the car, his head downward and his legs twisted out of shape, when the rescuers started work. Policeman Christoph, driving the city ambulance, arrived in response to an alarm, and with the railroad men took the injured to the Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital. Police Captain Brown and Policeman Miller later investigated the accident. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
