The particulars have not yet been learned pertaining to the shooting. (9 Jan 1913, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Hammon was the scene of a serious tragedy Saturday evening when Andrew Picklesimon was fatally shot with a 44 Winchester in the hands of John Holland, a young man 18 years of age, a resident of that place. From the best information that can be obtained, it seems that at various times the Larkin family, of which young Holland was a member, being a brother of Mrs. Larkin, have been the victim of derision and made the laughing stock of the town, because they were the city scavengers. At different times, the family had been insulted, often by the use of vulgar and profane terms. On this occasion young Holland was sorely provoked and took his rifle out with him to resent the insult. Mr. Picklesimon and two other men by the name of Climer were riding by in a buggy. Holland fired five shots at the retreating vehicle, the last shot taking effect in Picklesimon's lower bowels. The shot which had passed through the back of the buggy seat passed entirely through his body, inflicting an ugly wound which greatly aggrevated the case. While the wound was considered very serious, the injured man seemed quite strong and some hopes were entertained for his recovery, and as soon as an automobile could be secured, he was brought to the Elk City Hospital. It is reported that young Holland stated that he did not know Picklesimon, and that he was mistaken, and did not intend to shoot him, but that some parties had just passed that were disturbing them. An operation was performed and everything was done to relieve the sufferer, but without beneficial results, and he died Monday morning at 4 o'clock. The body was prepared for burial and was shipped to Hammon on the morning train. Immediately after the shooting Holland went to the officers and gave himself up. He was taken at once to Cheyenne for safe keeping. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
