Dr. Denby and an Elk City physician were both called Tuesday. Mr. Poarch's two sisters, Mrs. Smoutherman and Mrs. Love, of Elk City, were reached by phone and came in on the 3 p.m. train and were carried out to the place in an auto by John Poarch. Tuesday night the doctors performed an operation on Mr. Poarch and found that his bowels were badly lacerated in a number of places and very much bruised. They cleaned the parts and sewed up the broken parts, but before 12 o'clock he died. All that loving hands and skilled physicians could do, was done to save him, but to no avail. His remains were laid to rest in the Carter cemetery Wednesday at 2 p.m., the funeral services being conducted by the Masonic lodge, of which he was a good member. Mr. Poarch was a Christian gentleman, whose friends were numbered by his acquaintances and his many friends now offer their sincere sympathy to his bereft wife, daughter and sons, in this their darkest hours of sorrow and trouble. (2 Oct 1914, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Mr. Ed Poarch who was kicked by a horse Monday and died Tuesday night, was burried (sic) in the Poarch cemetery, 6 miles East of town, instead of the Carter cemetery, as stated on the first page. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Pastor I. F. Harmon and the Masonic order of Carter. A large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives attended the solemn funeral services at that place. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
