Mr. Poole was plowing in the field about a half mile from the house at the time the fire occurred. Mrs. Poole had started the fire in the stove, preparatory to begin her weeks washing. Leaving her babe on the bed near the stove she went into the cellar to bring up some things necessary to the days work. On returning to the room which she had lately left she found the bed on which she had left the babe covered with a sheet of flame. The fire soon communicated to the walls of the room and soon devoured the house. The poor helpless mother crazed by the fact that her babe was being consumed in the fire was unable to save any of the contents of the house. Much sympathy was expressed for the unfortunate family, and a liberal donation was made here for them. (26 May 1905, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The infant child of Lon Poole, living eight miles southeast of Elk City, is reported to have been burned to death. The mother left the child on the bed while she went to the cellar; when she returned the bed was on fire and the child so badly burned that it lived only a short time. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
