It has been learned that he had been taking a little laudanum at times to ease his rheumatism, but at this time he had told his family of his intentions. His family consists of a wife and five children. Medical aid was summoned, but it arrived too late. (26 Apr 1906, Thursday, Roger Mills Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Was it Suicide? Martin Ray died at his home on Croton creek west of Cheyenne, on Friday of last week. It is not positively known whether it was suicide or due to an accident. He had been sick all winter with quick consumption, accompanied by rheumatism, and has been using laudanum in small doses as a relief from pain. For three or four days he had been very weak, and it is not certain that the drug was taken with suicidal intent. He leaves a wife and four children, living on a farm, and in rather poor circumstances. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
