(3 Nov 1927, Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, OK): On last Sunday night, October 30th, 1927, between the hours of eleven and twelve o'clock, Hadley Riley came to an untimely death from a bullet wound at the hands of night watchman Williamson, whose gun was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking young Riley and entering his heart, who died instantly, only having breath left to utter the word, "Oh" before passing into eternity. Hadley Riley was born near Erick, Oklahoma, June 21st, 1903, making his age at the time of his death 24 years, 4 months and 9 days. He was converted and joined the Erick Baptist Church in the Fall of 1917. He was married in the year of 1925 to Miss Monte Martin. He having spent his entire life with Erick as his home was known and loved by everyone. "A pal to the fellow he was with," not having an enemy in his entire acquaintance, his word being his bond. A man of his make-up is a very desirable asset to a community, which makes our hearts very sad when we come to the realization that no more can we greet him on the streets and receive a greeting that seem to come from the depths of his very soul. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Tabernacle, Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by the pastor, B. A. Etheredge. The floral offerings were indeed beautiful which were presented by many Erick friends and from other points in the state. The people in attendance at the funeral services, only a small part could find seats in the tabernacle. The remains were laid to rest in the Erick cemetery beside his father who preceeded him some five or six years ago. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, mother, Mrs. Ada U. Riley, four brothers, Norma (sic) C., Ivan, J. C., and Joe; five sisters, Mrs. Jim Clay Adcox, Cordelia, Opal, Vera John, and Leila. Beside a host of other relatives and friends. The entire community joins the Democrat in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
