(21 Sep 1905, Thursday, Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): A Sudden Death Johny Robinson who lives two miles from Cheyenne, fell from a heavy loaded freight team and was run over. The wagon was loaded to about seven thousand pounds, and the wheels passed over his body. It broke his arm and thigh, and disjointed his neck from the shoulder. His father was on the jury in the Price murder case and some one unlawfully communicated to him the news of the death of his son. Mr. Robinson was pastrated (sic) with grief and the jury had to be dismissed and the Price case continued until next term. (22 Sep 1905, Cheyenne Sun Beam, Cheyenne, Roger Mills Co, OK): John Robinson, son of G. W. Robinson, was thrown from a freight wagon returning from Sayre last Saturday morning, at a crossing on the Sergeant-Major creek four miles south of town, and was instantly killed. He was driving a four mule team to a heavy load of freight, riding on top of the load. At the steep crossing on the creek he lost his balance and fell off, alighting on the upper side of the load. The ground where he fell was gravelly and very steep, causing him to slide backward and under the wheel of the wagon, which passed across and broke his neck. News of the accident was instantly brought to town, and a number of people went out to the scene of the accident, including Dr. Riley, the county coroner. No doubt of the facts leading to his death was entertained, and no inquest was held. The body was brought to town that afternoon, and was buried at the Cheyenne cemetery Sunday. At the time of the accident G. W. Robinson, the father of the boy, was sitting as a juror in the Price murder trial. When the court learned of the sad accident he stopped the trial and excused Mr. Robinson. This necessitated the discharge of the other jurors, and the case was continued to the next term of court. The suddenness of the tragedy shocked the court and the entire community, where the boy was well known. He was about eighteen years old, and was an inoffensive, polite, good boy. His father and mother and numerous relatives have the profoundest sympathy of our people for this most unfortunate disaster. (22 Sep 1905, Sayre Standard, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): The sixteen-year-old son of George Robinson of Cheyenne, met death in a peculiar manner Saturday while hauling a load of freight from this place to Cheyenne. As the heavily loaded wagon was going down a steep hill he fell off, striking his head and breaking his neck, killing him instantly. It seems that he was driving with one hand and holding to the brake rope with the other, when the wagon struck a hole in the road, lurching so as to throw him off. The accident happened about four and a half miles south of Cheyenne. George Robinson, father of the boy, was on the jury in the Price case, which was being tried in the district court. The testimony had all been taken and the lawyers were making their arguments when the news reached the court room. Judge Irwin immediately discharged the jury and continued the case to the next term of court. This is the second time that this case has been postponed. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
