(7 Dec 1922, Thursday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Clyde R. Shrive (sic) Dead. Once again our community has been plunged into the deepest sorrow by the death of a fine young man, Clyde R. Sheeve (sic). For some cause unknown to any one, he took his own life December 1st, about 3:39 p.m. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Lillie Shrive, two sisters, Misses Pearl and Ruby, and a number of other relatives, and a host of friends. He was laid to rest in Pioneer Cemetery on Saturday, Rev. Williams officiating. Clyde was born July 28, 1890, at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He served his country for 20 months being among the first to go to France, and suffered from the hardships, being returned to the hospital several times before his return home, and since then it has been apparent at times that his mind was affected. He was a young man highly respected and loved by those who knew him, and has all along had the sympathy of a large circle of friends, who now extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved mother and relatives. Card of Thanks Through the columns of this paper, we give our thanks of deepest gratitude to all who so kindly assisted us during the death of our beloved son and brother, and it shall be our endeavor to repay as time passes on. We also thank the Legion for the beautiful floral wreath which they sent. Mrs. S. E. Shreve and family. (8 Dec 1922, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): A SUICIDE Ex-Soldier Fears Ku Klux Klan and Shoots Self in Head. For months Claude Shrieves (sic), an ex-service man, 33 years of age, was in the 36th Division in France and had been living with his parents near Sayre, has suffered an unbalanced mind. He often expressed his fear of the "KKK" to his mother, and told her he was afraid to go to Sayre also told her he was afraid to be left alone on the farm, fearing the Kluxers would get him. Last Friday he killed himself with a 32 Colt automatic, by shooting through his head. He left six letters to friends, which said he intended to kill himself. His funeral was held Sunday by the local Legion. Many beautiful flowers were given. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
