(28 Sep 1904, Wednesday, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Lightning Strikes A man Friday Night Last and kills Him and His Team. Last Friday night as a Mr. Singleterry (sic), living about nine miles south east of Elk City, while driving along the road enroute to his home, was struck by lightning, and himself and team killed. As he was alone and no one witnessed the awful spectacle, no details can be given. The knowledge of his death came to the family the next morning when searchers found him and the team dead in the road where they met their instant death. Mr. Singleterry was about sixty years of age, a farmer and had a family. The remains were interred on Saturday. (Port Cemetery, Washita County: J. W. Singletary; born 31 Oct 1834; died 25 Sep 1904). Singletary, who lived eight miles southwest (sic) of Elk, while driving home one day last week was struck by lightning and instantly killed.
