(14 Jul 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. Mary A. Smith, of Borger, Tex., died in a Sayre hospital at 8 o'clock Saturday evening as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident which occurred seven miles west of Sayre on Highway 66. Mrs. Smith and her sister, Miss Molley Moore, and an aunt, Mrs. Sue McLima, 76, were on their way to Durant to visit relatives. There were no eye witnesses to the tragedy. A. D. Jones first discovered the wreck and with assistance of a traveling man put the women in cars and brought them to the hospital. Mrs. Smith, who was driving, never regained consciousness. The car was a new Ford sedan and apparently the women were driving at a rapid rate when one wheel ran off the pavment on the dirt shoulder of the road, causing the car to shoot across the pavement and into a ditch. The car turned over three times before it righted itself on the railroad right-of-way, Mrs. (sic) Moore said. Relatives were notified and H. S. Smith, husband of the victim, came just before she passed away. The body was shipped to Durant Sunday for burial. The aunt, Mrs. McLima, is still in the hospital here suffering from injuries but is not regarded as being in a critical condition. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
