O. Spencer, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Spencer, living 2 miles east of Canute (Washita County), met with a tragic death Tuesday evening about 4 o'clock when a team which he was driving ran away. Mr. Spencer and his father were in the field going after a load of feed when the team became frightened and started to run. The elder Spencer was thrown out of the back end of the wagon, but the younger man was thrown forward, alighting on the doubletrees, where he must have been held, as the team ran toward the house. When the team arrived near the house the wagon struck a tree and the team broke loose. Mrs. Spencer ran to the wagon and found her husband dead, one side of his head being terribly crushed. R. O. Spencer was married and the father of three children, a pair of twins and a younger child. He was 22 years old, and lived in a new house on the same farm with his parents. The body was brought to Grubitz & Son, undertaking parlor, and prepared for burial. (18 Mar 1916, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Ren Onnis Spencer was born in Bowie, Montague County, Texas, April 4,1904; died near Canute, Oklahoma, March 9, 1926, aged 21 years 11 months and 5 days. He was married to Miss Lucille Bennett Nov. 24, 1923. To this union was born three children; twins - Glen and Gwendolyn on Oct 19, 1924, and another son, James Paul, Dec. 12, 1925. He leaves to mourn his going a wife and three babies; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Spencer, two brothers, Walter Spencer, and Emmett E. Matthews, and one sister, Mrs. R. B. Cowherd. All of them live in or near Canute. He also left a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. S. Vanderhoofven of Wakita, Okla.
