(5 Oct 1928, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Wednesday of last week at Russell, south of Mangum, a two story residence burned. Tom L. Spruiell, 22 son of Rev. J. T. Spruiell of Eldorado, who was boarding there and working at the gin, was active in trying to put out the fire, but seeing the building was doomed rushed up stairs to secure his money which he had been saving to enable him to go to school, but before he could return the building fell in and his body was burned to a crisp. A companion started with him, but having a car beside the building thought it better to save that, and thus probably escaped a similar fate. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
