(12 Jul 1928, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Brother of Local Doctor Drowns (Springfield Daily News-Missouri) The body of E. A. Steckel, manager of a large resort and farm development project near Richland, missing since Sunday, was found early yesterday in a small stream more than a mile below the bridge where his automobile was discovered after his disappearance. It is believed that Mr. Steckel suffered an attack of heart disease, while standing on the small bridge, and was washed down stream. He first was missed when his motor car, with the engine still running, was found parked on a small bridge over a flooded stream. A search immediately was organized and the river was dragged. A small log across one end of the bridge, in front of the car, showed that Mr. Steckel's car had been halted. It is thought that in attempting to removed the log he was overcome. The body was taken to Richmond (sic) where a coroner's inquest will be conducted today. Mr. Steckel, a man of considerable means, was widely known throughout the Ozarks regions. He was the promoter of Turley Ridge resort and a farm development program whereby he enabled small farmers to get a start in life in the Ozarks. He has a summer home near Richland, and a winter home in Florida, and another in southern Texas. A $30,000 life insurance policy is included in his estate. Ed's Note - E. A. Steckel was a brother of Dr. G. W. Steckel of this city. Dr. Steckel returned Monday from Richland where he attended the funeral of his brother. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
