(18 Nov 1930, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Final rites for Waymon Stephenson, 51, who allegedly hanged himself on his farm near Strong City (Roger Mills County) yesterday, were read in the Methodist church at Hammon at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Stephenson is the father of Mrs. B. J. Marriott of this city. Family difficulties were believed to be the cause of the suicide, according to persons here who are close friends of the family. The body was found dangling from a rope in the barn about 200 yards from the farm home yesterday morning by one of the sons. Mr. Stephenson had been gone from the house only 10 or 15 minutes before the son found the body. Mr. Stephenson had stepped upon an overturned bushel basket and stepped off with the rope, which was tied to a rafter above, about his neck. He was choked without his neck being broken, physicians said. In Good Health No other cause except that there may have been difficulties was learned today. He was in apparently good health and had no great business trouble that could have been responsible for the action, it was stated. Mr. Stephenson is survived by his widow and four children. The children are Mrs. Marriott, of this city, Miss Jewel Stephenson and Edward and Cecil Stephenson, who live at the family residence. The family has lived around Strong City for the past 30 years. Mr. Stephenson was living on a rented farm a mile and a half east of the town at the time of his death. Interment was made in the Red Hill cemetery (Roger Mills County) with Killough-Hullum, city funeral directors, in charge. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
