(25 Nov 1920, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): INSTANTLY KILLED Thirteen year old Doyle Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Stewart, was instantly killed when a car driven by Levi Miller struck him as he was crossing the street in front of the Palace Drug Store last Tuesday morning. Doyle and two girls had been standing in the street talking, and he had just turned to cross the street when the car struck him and threw him to the pavement, killing him instantly. On account of the glare of the sun in his eyes, Levi says he did not see the boy and did not know he had struck him until some one called. He stopped the car immediately and went back to the scene of the accident. The boy was taken into the drug store and medical assistance summoned, but it was found that his neck was broken and his skull crushed when he was thrown to the pavement. He was taken to Grubitz Undertaking Parlors, where after the coroner's jury viewed the body, it was prepared for burial. A broken hearted father and mother, three brothers and sister will miss the cheerful presence of little Doyle, but they know he has only preceded them to the heavenly home where these great sorrows never come, and where he will be waiting for them. Doyle was such a bright little fellow, always doing little acts of kindness for his friends. He has been messenger boy for the Western Union for several weeks, and was so faithful in his work. On election night he brought the returns to the News-Democrat and seemed to be so happy in his work. Many that night remarked how attentive he was to his duties, and was always cheerful. Funeral services in charge of Rev. O. E. Palmer were held at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (26 Nov 1920, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): KILLED BY AUTO Thirteen Year Old Boy Run Down By Car At Elk City Tuesday Morning The thirteen year old son of Mr. Bill Stewart, of Elk City, was run down by an automobile and instantly killed on the streets of that city Tuesday morning. A young man by the name of Miller was driving the car that struck the Stewart boy. It is stated that his neck was broken by the impact of the car, death resulting instantly. Mr. Stewart, father of the lad that was killed, is an employee in one of the cafes there in Elk. We failed to learn the exact details of just how the accident happened. (26 Nov 1920, Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): AUTO KILLS BOY ON WAY TO SCHOOL Horrible Accident Occurs on Tuesday Morning at Bdwy. and Main The saddest accident occurring in our somber little city for many days, happened at the corner of Main and Broadway in front of the Palace Drug Store last Tuesday morning about eight-thirty o'clock when hundreds of children were on their way to school and Levi Miller came down Broadway and turned the corner at a slow speed, as verified by many, and by Dr. Donovan, who drove down Broadway following Mr. Miller. Mr. Miller's attention was directed to a bunch of school children gathered in front of the Palace Drug Store and he did not see Doyle Stewart at all he claims. Doyle was about 20 feet from the curb. Miller's big Chandler car knocked the boy down and the wheels passed over his chest and head, crushing the life from his body instantly. Mr. Miller stopped his car instantly one hundred feet further when called on to halt. He was dumfounded when he saw the lifeless form of the boy lying in the street and the blood gushing from his nose, mouth and ears. Doyle Francis Stewart was thirteen years old and leaves a mother and father and three brothers and a sister to mourn his death. Mr. Stewart has been working at the Fountain Cafe the past year, and Doyle was a cheerful lad, a hard and faithful worker and a favorite among his playmates. He was born in Elk City Feb. 14, 1907. His body was viewed by the coroner's jury at the Grubitz undertaking parlors, and the funeral services were held at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon, O. E. Palmer officiating. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
