(May 1901, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK):  Grimes Notes:
May 28th 1901:
There was a sad and fatal accident occured about 7 miles northwest of
here.  Mr. Arch McCombs was having a well dug, and a Mr. Thomas Stone was
doing the digging.  He had got down about 35 feet he went through about 15
feet of Sand, but had curbed it but the curb bursted (sic) and let the
sand in on him and smothered him to death.  Mr. McCombs was letting the
bucket down but couldn't get it there quick enough to reach Stone in time.
 He went down and dug down to him, but was too late to do him any good.
