The little girl had returned home from school, and while she and some younger children were playing under a shed near the barn, some shucks under the shed were set on fire by one of the children and the supposition is that little Gladys tried to put the fire out, which caught her clothing. Instead of running as people are apt to do in a case of this kind, she just stood still until her mother reached her, and whose hands were severely burned in trying to get the burning clothing off the child and by the time her father reached her she was burned from her ankles to her face. Mr. Street was plowing in the field some distance from the house. Notwithstanding the seriousness of her burns, she was still standing when her father reached her, and was perfectly conscious up to within a short time of her death. It seems somewhat remarkable as Dr. Denby states, that while she was so fearfully burned, she did not seem to suffer any pain and was conscious all the while. She died about 12:30 Tuesday morning, having lingered some five or six hours after the accident happened. The remains were interred in the Retrop cemetery (Washita County) Tuesday evening. We extend to the grief stricken family our sincere sympathy and condolence in their affliction. (19 Feb 1915, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Little Gladys Street who was burned to death last Monday evening was 8 years, 5 months and 16 days old. As has already been stated it happened by her clothing getting afire and at 12:30 that night the little one's spirit took its flight to a better home on high. We don't say it just because she is gone, but Gladys was an uncommonly good, sweet dispositioned child, loved by all her friends. Never to our knowledge did she have trouble with her little schoolmates. Gladys was a great lover of songs. Little Gladys never had professed the saving grace of God, but she was so young we have not the least doubt but that she is now enjoying the bliss and happiness that none but the redeemed can ever know. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
