Colts revolver. The bullet missed the heart about an inch but he died soon after being discovered by Mrs. Street. Mr. Street was in good financial condition and no reason can be discovered for the act unless it was that he brooded over his health until he became despondent. He was suffering from high blood pressure but was able to be around and attend to his business affairs. Saturday night he was preparing to take a bath when his wife went out to shut up the chickens. While she was thus engaged she heard a shot in the house and rushed in to find him with a bullet through his chest. He mentioned the name of a son, asked her to send for him and died. Besides his wife, Mr. Street leaves two sons, both married. He was known as a good citizen and father and an upright man in every way and his tragic death cast a shadow over the entire community. (27 Apr 1928, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): The people of the Retrop community and this part of the country, were severely shocked and grieved last Saturday night when the sad news went out that Mr. Ide Street of Retrop had killed himself at his home in that community. The details of the deplorable tragedy as reported to us are as follows: Mr. Street and wife were the only persons at the Street home when the terrible tragedy occurred and had been sitting around talking and along between 8 and 9 o'clock when Mrs. Street stepped out in the yard for a few moments, Mr. Street procured a revolver and fired a shot into his heart. The gun was held so close it is said that the flash scorched his clothing. Mrs. Street notified neighbors as quickly as possible and two children, and other relatives. Citizens who have been neighbors of Mr. Street for years inform us that he was one of the best men they ever knew and they had never noticed anything abnormal in his life and actions heretofore. Mr. Street had been a citizen of the Retrop community for many years and was regarded as one of the best and most influential citizens of the entire community and he will be sorely missed not only by his family and other relatives but by the community in which he lived. The funeral services were held at the Retrop Baptist Church on Monday evening with interment at the Retrop cemetery (Washita County). Rev. Campbell of Norman, former pastor at Retrop, had charge of the funeral services. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended each service. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
