A very sad accident occurred on Friday last, on Broadway, near the school building. D. W. Tracy, Jr., drove to the school building in his auto with his little seven-year-old daughter, Irene, and as she left the car her father saw an auto approaching and cautioned the child to be careful. However, it would seem that she failed to hear her father, and ran out from behind his auto directly in front of the approaching auto, and before the driver could stop, was run over and injured so seriously that death followed. While the child was unquestionably at fault in running out in front of the auto, still this is but another illustration of the need of enforcing the laws regarding the speed of autos in passing school grounds. This should not be construed as saying that in this case the driver was reckless, or speeding, for all evidence shows that he was not driving faster than is customary in that section, but it does show the necessity for greater care on the part of all auto drivers in the vicinity of school buildings. Funeral services for the little girl were held Friday afternoon, with interment at their former home at Cheyenne (Roger Mills County). The people in Sayre and vicinity extend to the bereaved family their sympathy. (20 Sep 1923, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Friday afternoon, a telephone message calling Mrs. John B. Tracy, Mr. Elbert Tracy and wife and Mrs. Vera Moore to Sayre was received. Irene, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Tracy, Jr., had been struck by a car and was dying. Though all haste was made by the grandparents and uncles and aunts, to reach the home of their stricken son and brother, they did not arrive in time to see the little child alive. It was telephoned that Dan had taken his little girls to school at noon, little Irene stepped out of her father's car and behind it when another car, drove up, throwing her into the curbing, the impact caused her death. The little body was brought to Cheyenne Saturday where it was tenderly laid to rest. Irene Tracy was born Oct. 3, 1916, and died Sept. 14, 1923, at the age of six years, 11 months and 11 days. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
