(21 Jul 1911, Friday, Texola Herald, Texola, Beckham Co, OK): KILLED BY LIGHTNING Carl Turner, a young man living near Sweetwater, was killed by lightning while standing in a barn during the rain last Monday afternoon. (21 Jul 1911, Friday, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Last Monday at about 3 p.m. Carl W. Turner living with his uncle, V. Z. Turner, 3 miles north of Sweetwater, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. He had been plowing in the field and because of the threatening weather brought his team to the barn, a large and high structure, tied the mules to their stalls and walked to the stable door when the lightning struck the south end of the roof passing down to the corner where Carl was standing. His hat and clothing were badly torn and the body cut and bruised. Instant death undoubtedly ensued. Carl was the son of W. H. and Hattie Turner of Gallion, Ohio, and had been here working for his uncle, V. Z. Turner for the past two seasons. He was 20 years and 3 months old, an exemplary young man, of no bad habits, and numbered his friends by the extent of his acquaintance. The body was interred at the Mulberry Cemetery north of Sweetwater (Roger Mills County). The relatives have the deep sympathy of the entire community. --------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.html
