Young Volentine had gone with his mother to the cotton field early in the afternoon. He was playing in the field and slipped away from his mother to play in a ravine near the field. In the course of his playing he wandered down the ravine to the water edge and removed his shoes and stockings. His father was working in the field on the other side of the water and it is believed that the little boy was trying to get to his father when he stepped into the hole and drowned. The body was recovered immediately. It was located by finding his cap floating on the surface of the water. Help was immediately called and the body recovered at once. Mrs. Volentine and an uncle of the boys were within a hundred feet of the water when Hubert was drowned. The body was immediately rushed to the Tisdal hospital in Sayre but all efforts to save his life were in vain. A lung motor was used but it failed to bring life to the drowned boy. Hubert Pierce was born September 8, at the family home near Berlin. He died near the family home Wednesday June 11, 1930, at the age of 5 years, 9 months and 3 days. He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Volentine (sic), a grandmother, Mrs. Lizza Potter, two half sisters Rosala and Edora Volentine and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Sand Stone school Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. Carl Covey of the First Church of Christ in Elk City officiating. Burial was made in the Grandview cemetery under the direction of the Killough-Hullum funeral home. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
