(14 Apr 1916, The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Charley Waldron (sic), a farmer residing about eight miles northwest of Carter, lost his life in a threshing machine accident Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred about five o'clock while threshing grain on his farm. They had just commenced to thresh maize, having only threshed about ten bushels when one of the iron or steel bands that encircles the end of the cylinder broke tearing away the entire top of the machine, and coming over struck Mr. Waldron in his left side, breaking every rib on that side and injuring him internally so bad that he died at seven o'clock that evening. His left side it is said was beat almost into a pulp and it seems remarkable that he lived as long after the accident as he did, and too being conscious of his condition. The deceased was well known in Carter and in this vicinity, having formerly lived on J. C. MacKenzie's place near here. His remains were buried in the Carter cemetery, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. (20 Apr 1916, Elk City Leader, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Chas. H. Waldren Accidentally Killed Chas. H. Waldren, a well known farmer of the county, living south of Sayre and near Carter, lost his life on Tuesday afternoon of last week when part of the machinery of a threshing machine at which he was at work came loose and struck him. The Sayre Headlight said of the accident: It seems that Waldren climbed on top of the separator, just back of the cylinder and while standing there a band on one end of the cylinder broke, catching the wooden covering over the cylinder, and on which Waldren was standing, tearing it out from under him and throwing him upon the cylinder. The cylinder on one of these machines is run at a terrific speed and Waldren was literally torn into pieces. He was still alive, however, when rescued, and taken to his home, medical aid being promptly summoned, but he passed away in a little less than two hours after the accident. Mr. Waldren was an old resident of this section and well known among nearly all of the residents of Sayre and the territory southeast of the city, among whom he had a large circle of friends who will sincerely regret his untimely end. The funeral services were held at the Wash (Carter) cemetery where interment was made, the services being conducted by Rev. A. S. Davis. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
