F. Watson returned from a trip to Retrop the first of the week. Mrs. Watson told us a Mr. Fletcher Wallace was killed by lightning during the storm Monday evening. He had just returned from Carter in this truck when struck. His wife was shocked too, but she recovered. (30 Jul 1920, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Killed by Lightning Mr. J. F. (sic) Wallace, a prominent farmer residing 3 miles southwest of Retrop, (Washita County) was instantly killed by lightning late Monday afternoon. His wife was badly shocked and burned by the same bolt. At the time of the fatal accident Mr. and Mrs. Wallace were at the cow lot milking and when the rain came up they went under the shed which was struck by the lightning resulting as stated above. Mr. Wallace was in Carter the afternoon that he was killed, bringing in a truck load of wheat. He left town for his home only a few hours before the fatal accident.
