(10 Jan 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): BOY DIES FROM BURNS Orville Warren, the seven year old son of Alvin Warren in Merritt neighborhood went to the mail box Saturday afternoon, with his little brother, to get the mail. Having some matches they set fire to some grass and when it looked as if it was getting away from them, Orville jumped on same to try to put out the fire. His clothes became ignited and by the time he ran to the home most of his clothes were burned off him, even to one shoe, and his body was badly burned to the waist. The doctor was summoned immediately, but from the first there was no hope for him. He was brought to hospital and was conscious until about two o'clock but the little fellow passed away on Sunday morning at five o'clock. Funeral services were held at Merritt Church on Sunday afternoon where a large crowd assembled. A number of the Royal Neighbors of Elk City were in attendance, Mrs. Warren being a member of this lodge. It was one of the saddest funerals the people had ever attended. Mrs. Warren had but recently underwent a very serious operation, and had not regained her strength, and the shock was almost more than she could stand. The little fellow looked like he was asleep for his face had not been injured. He was the oldest child in the family and his death cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood. The mother has been prostrated since the boy's death. Mrs. York, of Hammon, mother of Mrs. Warren, was here with her daughter until Tuesday afternoon. The deepest sympathy is extended to the family who seem to have had more than their share of trouble. May the Comforter who is ever present to help those who mourn, be very near to them in their sorrow. (31 Jan 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): IN MEMORY OF LITTLE ORVAL (sic) WARREN Johnnie Orval Warren was born Nov. 25, 1916, and on January 6, 1924, the Death Angel claimed him age 7 years 1 mo., 2 days. He was the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Warren living in the Merritt neighborhood. Short was his journey here below but we feel our hearts have been made more pure and tender by this little life that was given to us. Orval had a kind and loving disposition and many were his little friends. He took much interest in his school work and always like to attend church and Sunday school. He will be sadly missed in the home where he was such a companion to the younger children, but our loss is heaven's gain. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, father and mother, two little brothers and one little sister. Funeral services were held at the Merritt church by Rev. Bigsbee where a large crowd had assembled to pay their last respects where Orval layed (sic) in peaceful slumber in his little white casket covered with flowers. The remains were laid to rest in the Merritt Cemetery. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
