(18 Jan 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Spring Creek News: Word was received by S. R. Wells and wife who live southeast of Berlin that their son, Chris, had died on Wednesday, January 11th, at Los Angeles, Calif. Chris was injured about three weeks ago by a car running up on the side walk, striking him and severely injuring him. He appeared to be getting along very well, but died quite suddenly. This was a great shock to his parents and two sisters, also many friends. The body will be shipped back here for burial. (25 Jan 1923, Thursday, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): OBITUARY. Christopher E. Wells, son of S. R. and Susanna Wells, was born at Willow Springs, Douglas county, Kansas. Moved from there, at the age of 11 years to Stillwater, Okla. Lived there four years then moved to western Oklahoma, with his parents, where he married Ebbie B. Hilderbrand February 11, 1914. To this union were born two children, Laren, six and Kenneth, four. Having lived in Oklahoma till November 1, 1922, when they moved to Chatsworth, California, where he accepted a position on a lemon and orange ranch, and there was accidentally injured December 13, 1922, when an automobile ran over him, which resulted in death January 11, 1923. Aged 31 yrs., 3 months, 19 days. He died in Los Angeles from hemorrhage of the liver. His body was shipped to Sayre, Oklahoma, January 18th, and was laid to rest at Doxey-Sayre cemetery same day of arrival. Funeral services were conducted to a large crowd at cemetery, by Brother Root of Elk City, Oklahoma. He leaves to mourn his departure, his companion and family, father and mother Wells, Mrs. C. A. Plummer and Mrs. Ross Mowery of Berlin, brother Mack of Chatsworth who accompanied his wife and body home, and Mrs. S. F. Helderbrand (sic) and son, Gervis and Gerald and daughters Eva and Elvie all attended the funeral. He also leaves a host of relatives, and friends.
