Train No. 92 from the west arriving here at 2:35 was being put away by the crew and Whited had uncoupled the train in the center for the purpose of placing the train on two different tracks. It is supposed that he attempted to pass between the two secions (sic) after he had uncoupled the cars, when the train was suddenly pushed together, crushing him between the couplings. He was removed to Lane's undertaking rooms where the body was prepared for shipment to Clebourne, Texas, for burial. The deceased was well known in Sayre, having removed from Sayre with his widowed mother to Amarillo about four months ago. He was a young man about 26 years of age and had recently been promoted to the position of extra conductor on the Rock Island. (24 May 1912, Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, OK): Fred Whited of Sayre was crushed to death between two freight cars one night last week while trying to make a coupling in the Sayre switch yards. He has a widowed mother at Amarillo where he was sent for burial. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
