(18 Dec 1930, Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): Mistake In Sale Is Cause For Death Of Former Sayre Woman At Strong City. Being sold gasoline for kerosene which was placed in an ordinary oil lamp caused an explosion which resulted in the death of Mrs. Fannie L. Wilson, wife of R. A. Wilson, who resided nine miles northeast of Strong City (Roger Mills County), last Friday night. Mrs. Wilson had just filled the lamp from the can containing the gas. The lamp exploded soon after lighting and the flames ignited her clothes which were practically burned from her body. On hearing her cries, Mr. Wilson rushed to her and was severely burned about the face and hands in trying to smother the flames. Mr. Wilson had purchased supplies from a grocery in Hammon on Wednesday. He had asked for a gallon of kerosene and through mistake the employees filled the can with gasoline, it is said. The Wilsons had lived near Sayre for several years before moving on a farm near Strong City and they are well known in this section. The funeral services were held at Lone Oak church at 4 P.M., Saturday with Rev. Isaac, pastor of that church officiating. Burial was made in the Lone Oak cemetery with Littrell-Moore of Sayre in charge of arrangements. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
